Bathroom Floor Considerations

bathroom-flooringWhen decorating a bathroom, lighting, flooring, fixtures and fittings can be chosen with a view to creating a desired mood and providing the right facilities.  Electrical and plumbing work are best done by professionals as there are many safety regulations to adhere to.  However, once the plumbing, wiring and arrangement of the bathroom have been agreed, it is time to consider the decorating, starting with flooring.

Flooring will depend on what sort of bathroom it is to be.  If it is for children or teenagers, the floor covering should be of the type that will not be adversely affected by water, and one that is easy to mop up after a boisterous bathtime.  Shower rooms are also a good place to use water-resistant floor coverings, such as ceramic tiles or linoleum.  For an adult’s ensuite bathroom the same flooring can be continued through from the bedroom, or choose a floor covering that will complement the colouring and style of the bedroom.  In some luxurious bathrooms, a carpet can be an indulgence, but it must be suited to bathrooms, and able to withstand the pressure of damp and steam, as well as being easy to vacuum or brush clean.

Bathroom floors should not only be water-resistant but must also be comfortable underfoot – especially barefoot.  Ceramic tiles, for instance, can be cold to the touch, so cotton or towelling mats in front of the hand-basin, by the lavatory and the bath will provide a more comfortable place to stand, but they must have anti-slip backing.  Wooden floors well sealed and varnished will be water-resistant and the sealing should prevent splinters in the foot.  Cork tiles must be well sealed, most being sold already treated with a PVC coating. If they are not treated, tiles may swell and then shrink and break if they get wet.  The colour and design of the flooring will also contribute to the overall look of the whole room.
